Tied Up

Aberystwyth's defeat to Cardigan B in January was only our first of the season. What has really been plaguing the club is draws, and the match against Steynton A at the Emlyn Cafe, Tanygroes on Monday 24th January was yet another. On top board, Rudy van Kemenade caught David Pinch by surprise with a sharp line of the Budapest and had a won position within a few moves. By the end of the game he was six pawns up! Julie van Kemenade got a favourable knight versus bad bishop ending against Mark Pafford, but there was no clear win, and she agreed a draw. I played cagily against Scott Hammett's Stonewall System, having lost a horrible game against it last time we played, and we soon exchanged off to reach a dead drawn position. Tom Gunn didn't get his usual kingside attack from his Colle System, and his advance on the queenside didn't have a clear target. Instead, it was John Miller who attacked on the kingside and overwhelmed the White king. The result was our fourth 2-2 draw of the season.
