The Run Continues

Aberystwyth has dominated the league so far this season, and the run continued against Cardigan B on Wednesday 7 February at the Emlyn Cafe, Tanygroes. The top two games were both positional crushes. Against Tony Haigh, Rudy van Kemenade dominated the centre with his Bird's Opening, eventually pushing his e- and d-pawns through for a decisive advantage. Adam Watkin-Jones achieved something similar with Black, setting up camp in the heart of Joshua Brewer's position and leaving him no space to defend in. Julie van Kemenade's Ruy Lopez against Ben Brewer was much more double-edged, with some complicated tactics, but she thrives on such positions, and her attack won out in the end. Georgina Gray also enjoys attacking, but this time the attack abruptly switched over after she won the exchange, and it was Awne Osinga who made all the running from then on, reaching a winning ending when things calmed down. A 3-1 win for Aberystwyth.
