Even in the online format, matches between Aberystwyth and Cardigan have something of the feel of an Old Firm rivalry, and the match in the Dyfed Online League on Tuesday 23rd February was no exception. Top boards Rudy van Kemenade and Howard Williams have had many fierce fights over the years, so it was only to be expected that this latest meeting would be a complex struggle. In a sharp King's Indian, Rudy went a pawn down and had to seek piece activity in compensation. Eventually the only way out was to give up a piece with the aim of eliminating all White's pawns, and, with Howard short of time and having to defend against mate threats, this was enough to earn Rudy the draw. In contrast, Adam Watkin-Jones's game against Ben Brewer was over quickly, as he overlooked a threat to his h pawn in a Slav, and resigned in disgust, though there was still plenty of play left. Once again I had some positional problems with my Dutch Stonewall, this time against Gareth Williams. When he offered a piece for a couple of pawns and an unbalanced position, I should probably have taken it, but I hadn't seen very far into the sequence and passed it up, after which the game settled into equality. Tom Gunn's Greek gift sacrifice in his Colle System wasn't sound, but Joshua Brewer didn't find the best defence, and the White attack broke though for the win. The match was drawn, 2-2.

The Dyfed Online League resumed on Tuesday 16th February after its winter break, and Aberystwyth resumed its campaign with a draw against Steynton A. Adam Watkin-Jones. playing White against David Pinch, could heve been in trouble early on when he missed the fact that his queen was overloaded. Fortunately for him, Black missed it, too, and he won a pawn with a dominant game, where he could have made more of the weaknesses round his opponent's king, but chose to trade off into a won ending instead. My Dutch defence against Martin Jones landed me with a pawn weakness, and no sooner had I managed to neutralize White's pressure than I allowed a tactic that left him with two powerful bishops against my rook, after which he had all the play. Tom Gunn set a new record by making a mouseslip on the first move against Mark Paffard; 1.e4 is not normally considered a blunder, but it can be disconcerting when you had intended to open with a Colle System. Instead it was a Sicilian, and White went wrong early on, allowing a devastating double attack on his f and h pawns. Sam Holman's middlegame from his Modern defence against Robert Lovegrove was roughly even, with potential for both sides, when White overlooked an attack on a knight, and more material losses soon followed. The result was a 2-2 draw.

Taking advantage of a gap between other online events, there was a one-day rapidplay tournament played on Tuesday 9th February. Aberystyth's Rudy van Kemenade was the winner with 5/5, with Adam Watkin-Jones second on 4/5, beating Steynton's Scott Hammett on tiebreak. Of the other Aber players, Tom Gunn and I scored 3 and Sam Holman scored 2. The event was great fun - thanks to David Pinch for organizing it. Here are the games of the Aber players.

The last round of the Dyfed Online Closed tournament, played, mostly, on Tuesday 2nd February, saw the Aber players changing places, though Cardigan's Howard Williams continued his serene progress to the title. I got a strong attack against Bill Hewitt with my English opening, but wasn't sure how to continue. After a long think, I took the wrong option and the game changed quickly with his pieces invading the weaknesses in my position instead of the other way round. Adam Watkin-Jones had a lot of pressure against Mark Paffard's backward pawn in a Closed Sicilian, and White's pieces were so tied down to its defence that they were unable to respond when the attack switched to the king. Rudy van Kemenade emerged with a superior development from his Vienna / Bishop's Opening, and when Scott Hammett missed the threat to a piece, Black's collapse was sudden. Tom Gunn had the edge against David Pinch in a Queen's Pawn Game in which the players were castled on opposite sides. Black's attack got though first, but he missed the winning line and settled for a draw against his higher-rated opponent. Sam Holman was under pressure from Gwyn Jones in another Queen's Pawn Game, but White was unable to deal with an unexpected counter-threat, losing a piece, though the ending was still hard work for Black. Howard Williams won the tournament with 5/5, with Martin Jones second on tie-break above Bill Hewitt, both on 4. Adam was Aber's highest-placed player with 3½. Rudy and I finished on 3, Tom on 2½ and Sam on 2.
